The State Of Comedy And A World Without Norm Macdonald

On this episode of The Federalist Radio Hour, Josh Denny, host of “Next Week Tonight,” joins Culture Editor Emily Jashinsky to reflect on the state of comedy and how Norm Macdonald’s passing will affect comics around the globe.

“Funny is undisputable,” Denny said. “I mean funny is the undisputed champion and if a guy is funny enough, you know, you can kind of battle anything.”

Comedians, Denny said, don’t have as long of a celebrity shelf life as musicians and actors but he believes Macdonald’s significance will live on.

“I think he was like a purist in terms of comedy. I mean, it was always about getting to the best joke. And my favorite comedians are always guys who put the quality of the joke or getting to the joke above everything else,” Denny said. “And myself historically, I’ll make jokes that I don’t necessarily agree with but if I think it’s the funniest joke that is what you have to do to serve comedy. So I think comedians loved him because he always made it a point to serve the art form first and then made his points or tried to have a point of view second.”
